Strategic Plan

2025 – 2028 Strategic Plan Statement

To position USL as a top independent school in the country and one that prepares and guides students to navigate a complicated and complex world, USL’s 2028 strategic goals are presented as three pillars:

Pillar One

Empowered Learners. Inspired Leaders.
We are redefining what it means to be a scholar, a leader, and a citizen in today’s world.

Pillar Two

USL in the World
Rooted in Charleston. Connected to a global future.

Pillar three

Sustainable Growth. Lasting Impact. Building the foundation for the next generation.

Pillar One

Enrich academic rigor through immersive learning that sparks inquiry, debate, and original thinking.

Complete comprehensive program reviews across all divisions to ensure innovation, quality, and alignment with our mission

Why It Matters

When students understand themselves, their strengths, and their responsibilities, they learn with purpose and joy. By fostering curiosity, kindness, compassion, courage, resilience, and integrity—alongside rigorous academics—we prepare USL graduates to lead with vision, serve with empathy, and create solutions to challenges that matter. Through forward-thinking education and meaningful service, they leave our school ready to contribute to a better, more connected world.

Pillar Two

Amplify USL’s academic and experiential model across Charleston and beyond through targeted outreach and storytelling.

Engage alumni as mentors, guest speakers, and activity leaders to enrich the student experience and foster lifelong connection.

Build bridges with local organizations and expand participation in our Board of Visitors

Expand and celebrate volunteer engagement across the USL community.

Continuously refine our communication strategies to ensure meaningful connections with every stakeholder

Schedule and deliver a minimum of four public speaking engagements annually to highlight our mission and engage new families.

Why It Matters

USL’s classroom extends into the community and the wider world, demonstrating what is possible when education is bold, innovative, and deeply connected to real life. By cultivating curiosity, courage, and compassion in every interaction, we help students understand diverse perspectives, build authentic relationships, and recognize their ability to make a positive difference. In doing so, we raise expectations for what a school can achieve—showing that education can be transformative not only for students, but for the community and the world they will shape.

Pillar three

Launch and sustain a capital campaign that positions USL for future facilities expansion and innovation.

Craft a thoughtful leadership succession plan that ensures continuity, vision, and strength.

Maintain a balanced budget and strengthen our operating reserves to safeguard USL’s future.

Diversify revenue streams to ensure long-term institutional resilience.

Build strategic reserves for transportation and safety infrastructure.

Why It Matters

A thriving school sustains its mission for generations. By investing in people, programs, and resources, we ensure that USL can continue inspiring curiosity, fostering courage, and nurturing compassion in every student. We believe in the power to replenish, and renew, not only for our students, but for our faculty, staff, and the communities we serve. Our commitment to stability and innovation means that future graduates—like those today—will leave with the heart to care, the mind to create, and the courage to act in ways that strengthen their communities and contribute to a better, more connected world.Develop and sustain strong enrollment numbers, establish new sources of revenue, increase overall fundraising to ensure USL’s long-term sustainability, and address present and future facilities needs

Our strategic plan supports us in defining how we will measure the school’s success.
