Volunteer Opportunities for Parents
Our parents, guardians, and families bring diverse talents and varying amounts of time to share with University School. We offer several ways for you to use your gifts to benefit our students and the USL community.
Parent Committees
Outreach Committee
Jessica & Brendan Lewis, Chairs
Increase visibility about USL in the greater Charleston community to support enrollment goals. Activities include identifying cross-marketing and public speaking opportunities and boosting social media presence with reviews, testimonials, and targeted online sharing.
Family Connection Committee
TBD, Chair
Create meaningful connections among USL families to deepen their school community connection by coordinating and hosting fun, social gatherings throughout the year.
Staff and Teacher Appreciation Committee
Heidi Smart, Chair
Coordinate and fund acts of kindness throughout the year – such as donated meals, snacks, beverages, and birthday gifts – to show faculty and staff they are appreciated for their hard work and commitment.
Annual Fund Committee
Brie Worden and Rob Davis, Co-Chairs
Volunteer liaisons conduct outreach and coordinate communications to appeal to various USL communities (parents, grandparents, former families, alumni, and local businesses) to support USL’s raised income goal. Read more about the USL Annual Fund.
Spring Annual Fundraiser Committee
Savannah Cochrane, Chair
Parent volunteers help create, coordinate, and execute the Spring Annual Fundraising Event that traditionally features an online/ in-person auction, live entertainment catered non-seafood items and traditional Lowcountry oyster roast. Proceeds benefit USL’s Signature Programs.
Mentor Night Committee
Kendra Tidwell & Josh Eboch, Jennifer Ness & Matt Walker, Jason Gubbels (Heather Mahoney, Staff Support)
Enhance a USL Mentor Night by providing donated refreshments to one scheduled Friday Mentor Night and arriving early to set up, serve food, and help break down.
Please reach out to Heather Mahoney to volunteer or learn more about our Parent Committees.
Additional Volunteer Parent Opportunities
Parent Ambassadors at Oct. 19th Mt. Pleasant Children’s Festival
Heather Mahoney, Staff Contact
Join us for a 1-hour shift at the USL booth during the 2025 Mt. Pleasant Children’s Festival on Sunday, October 19th. Parents (and students!) are needed to represent USL at our booth and help facilitate our kids’ game and prizes.
Weekend Community Service
Monica Doubal, Staff Contact
Created in March 2020, this is a special optional program beyond our regular integrated program of community service (50+ hours/year for each student). This entails service to underserved communities that we have long-standing relationships with by organizing donation drives, gathering supplies, and assisting with occasional Saturday morning distributions.
LOTC Chaperones and Drivers
Heather Mahoney, Staff Contact
Attend one of USL’s experiential field trips, AKA Learning Outside the Classroom (LOTCs), by serving as a chaperone and/or a driver.
Note to Parents: Traditionally, LOTC trips have blended groups, meaning your child may not be in your car and/or you may not be in the same group. This allows you to experience the same learning adventure and get to know members of the USL community on your own. At the same time, sometimes moments like volunteering at school can be infrequent, and you’d prefer to be with your child. Please let us know your preferences so we can assign you “USL-style” or with your child.
Open Houses
Heather Mahoney, Staff Support
Support USL’s recruitment efforts by attending and bringing light refreshments to a quarterly Open House. Meet with prospective families and represent USL as a Parent Ambassador.
Special Event Support
Various, Staff Support
Support USL events by arriving early or staying late to help with necessary setup for larger events such as Graduations, Dances, World Languages Day, etc.
Divisional Overnight Trip Chaperone
Jason Kreutner, Staff Support
Divisional trips are considered a capstone to year-round LOTCs requiring students to implement all that they learn, student and practice throughout the year. Sign up to learn more about what chaperoning entails including training, responsibilities, expense and expectations. Sign up form only indicates expressed interest.
